EJ · Tuscan Excursion to Siena and San Gimignano

Affectionately known as “The Beloved,” the medieval town of Siena will capture your heart and your soul with its narrow Gothic streets and steep steps winding over the ridges of three hills. Eleven streets fan out from the huge, shell-shaped, brick Piazza del Campo where the Palio horse race is held each summer. Here you’ll see the Palazzo Pubblico (town hall), which was built between 1297 and1680. A spectacular view of the city rewards those energetic enough to climb the 300 narrow steps of the tower. Dominating the plaza is the striking black-and-white-striped Gothic cathedral, begun in 1065 and finally finished in the 14th century. One of the most famous features is the beautiful inlaid mosaic floor, which depicts Biblical stories. After touring Siena, you will have time to enjoy lunch at leisure before heading to San Gimignano. San Gimignano is considered the best-preserved medieval town in Italy, with its walled old town and striking tower houses standing on a hilltop, creating a unique skyline in the rolling Tuscan countryside, where vineyards and olive groves dominate the landscape. The Historic Centre of San Gimignano is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its notable examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture and the astonishing 14 towers that have survived numerous wars, earning it the nickname of “The Town of Fine Towers.” You will be free to explore this fascinating and charming town, which offers excellent shopping for local products such as savory wines, olive oil, gelato and saffron.
